Founded by Clément Robert, Domaine Léon is situated in Landreville, in the Côte des Bar. It produces champagne wines that combine precision and character.
Where tribute meets ambition
Although the Robert family’s vine-growing history can be traced back to the 1820s, it was Léon Robert who took the first step beyond the vineyards and began winemaking, producing his own champagnes in the 1950s. His son Georges perpetuated his know-how and family traditions until 1990. The next generation, Olivier focused only on viticulture, until Clément joined the family business. Léon’s great-grandson was determined to take up the winemaking torch once more and revive the tradition. In naming his domain “Léon”, Clément Robert pays homage to his great-grandfather who had a taste for the finer things in life and a love for quality time sharing food and wine with friends and family.
An ambition to produce unique wines that reflect their terroir
After travelling and working in both French and international vineyards, Clément honed his vision, deciding on a very precise idea of what he wanted to do: extend the work carried out in the vineyard by vinifying and marketing his own wines, seeing the process through to the very end. And with this in mind, he created the Domaine Léon.
His vineyards span almost 8 hectares around the village of Landreville, in the Aube department of France. They produce four of the official Champagne grape varieties: the traditional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Blanc, a historic variety in Landreville. From vineyard work to bottling, particular care is taken at each stage of production to ensure the result is high quality champagne.
Vineyard work includes tillage, grass coverage for every other row, the use of plant-based infusions in addition to organic treatments, and so on. Since 2019, Clément has gradually brought organic practices to his vineyards, and – driven by his convictions – has begun applying the principles of biodynamic viticulture. This same approach also permeates his work in the cellar, to allow the terroir to express itself as naturally as possible: limited inputs, fermentation using indigenous yeasts, the opportunities
are endless. He has also chosen to vinify and mature his production in wood, a living material that brings a unique character to the wines.
What is the Domaine Léon signature?
The Domaine’s wines are always vintages, so they reflect that single year’s production and its characteristics.
They are matured in oak barrels to enhance and contribute something special to the finished wine: an aromatic blend and an exceptional patina.
All the champagnes are zero dosage, to highlight their authentic qualities, and contain no added artifice.
